Description

Biosorption is one of the efficient methods in trapping toxic ions, due to its simplicity, sludge-free operation, easiness in handling and biodegradable property. Cost effective materials, being abundant and eco-friendly had been identified, collected, segregated, cleaned and utilized after appropriate modifications/ specified activations as biosorbents, the sources being plants, animals and agro-based wastes. Modified materials were categorized into varying particle sizes. Extension of modifications was uplifted by synthesizing nano sized and magnetic nano composites using precise techniques. Surface area, pore diameter, morphology, elemental constitutions, functional groups of the materials were verified using specific techniques.   These prepared materials were employed for the selective removal of heavy metal ions prevalent in electroplating / paint industries, alloying units, dye molecules present exuberantly in textile discharges; anions (F-, NO3-, PO43-) and pesticides found as ground water contaminants and domestic leachates through Batch Equilibration / Column experiments. Isothermal, Equilibrium, Kinetic and Statistical studies were carried out.   The implications of the research had resulted in the employment of biomaterials for the removal of noxious substances from the aqueous solutions and industrials effluents, along with the successful installation of FRP device at the industrial belt for  treatment of industrial effluents, envisaging a pollution free environment. Further, regeneration of generated secondary pollutants and their effective utilization was ensured.
