Description

Paullinia pinnata Linn. is a medicinal plant whose leaves are used folklorically to treat various ailments including whooping cough, fever, diarrhoea and colic. However, a safety margin needs to be determined and this is the essence of this study. Phytochemical screening of the leaves of Paullinia pinnata Linn. showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins and cardiac glycosides. Using the methanol leaf extract, the acute toxicity study was carried out in male Wistar mice using seven different doses (100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 mg/kg body weight) but had no effect on gross behaviour, and on morphology and did not result in mortality at any of the doses. The sub-acute toxicity study, which was carried out in male Wistar rats using five different doses (50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg body weight), showed that the extract had innocuous effect on renal and haematopoietic systems.
