Description

Across the CEMAC region millions of women remain locked out of the formal financial system. Mobile money has been hailed as a game changer but does it actually deliver on that promise? Drawing on the Finscope Cameroon 2017 survey and a decade of regional data (2014-2023), this book investigates whether fintech genuinely expands women's access to, and everyday use of, financial services. Using rigorous econometric analysis, it uncovers a striking finding: mobile money alone does not significantly increase women's likelihood of owning a bank or savings account. Education and mobile phone ownership matter more. Rather than dismissing fintech's potential, this study offers a clear eyed, evidence based path forward, one where technology is paired with financial literacy, digital empowerment, and gender responsive design. A must read for researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners seeking to turn financial inclusion rhetoric into measurable impact for women in Central Africa.
