Description

Theatre has always demanded a body in a room. A seat, a stage, and a few hundred strangers watching the same light fall on the same actor. Virtual Reality asks a different question: what happens when that room dissolves, and the stage travels to wherever the headset goes? This book follows that question into a live experiment. In collaboration with Second Theatre, a Finnish VR theatre company built on productions from the Finnish National Theatre, ten participants at Tampere University put on headsets and watched a 55-minute drama called Two Phone Calls. Their reactions form the evidence at the center of this book: a sense of presence strong enough to make people forget where they were sitting, a real hunger for interactivity that today's platforms barely satisfy, and a set of very concrete barriers. Heavy headsets. Disorienting subtitles. And a complete absence of the shared laughter and silence that make live theatre what it is.   Drawing on interviews, survey data, and a wide review of scholarship on virtual theatre, immersion, and digital accessibility, this book argues that inclusion cannot be an afterthought in VR theatre design. Multilingual subtitles, audio description, adjustable interfaces. These need to be built into the platform from day one, not patched on once the core technology works. The book also confronts an uncomfortable gap in its own research, and in the field more broadly: the near-total absence of disabled users from VR theatre testing so far.   Part case study, part call to action, this is a grounded look at what it will take for virtual theatre to grow past being a novelty for early adopters and become a genuinely accessible cultural space. For researchers, developers, and anyone curious about where theatre goes next, this book offers both the data and the argument.
