The success of endodontic treatment relies heavily on irrigation, which serves several crucial functions depending on the chosen irrigant. One of these functions is reducing friction between the instrument and dentine. Normal irrigation has been shown in studies to eliminate up to 90% of the original size of bacterial colonies. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a powerful irrigant used in endodontic therapy due to its tissue-dissolving and antibacterial properties. To thoroughly eradicate necrotic pulp and germs, it is strongly recommended to use an antibacterial agent like NaOCl during biomechanical preparation. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), a cationic bisbiguanide, has been identified as a potential endodontic irrigant and an effective antibacterial agent against resistant pathogens such as Candida albicans and Enterococcus faecalis, commonly found in infected root canals.
