Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children form a major group suffering from different degrees of speech retardation. Clinically, it is a clearly defined and easily identified group. Hearing Impairment is a defect or disruption in the link route which may be due to congenital or environmental factors like improper development and disease or damage to any part of the hearing mechanism. This is a disorder that can affect any one at any stage of their lives. Our ears are an important link to the world of sound. The widespread illiteracy, low economic condition, ignorance about the available means of treatment, superstition and inaccessibility to medical facilities are generally the factors responsible for high incidence of handicap in rural areas of Meghalaya, India.
