The use of drugs in addition to the desired pharmacological effect, is associated with many problems, including their side effects and drug interactions. This book focuses on clarifying and identifying the most important drug interactions, and aims to inform all medical staff and students about the occurrence of interactions, the consequences that patients may have, their prevention and management. By interaction we mean when the effect of one drug changes as a result of the presence of another drug, medicinal herbs, drinks and certain foods. This change may affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug. This means that the absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of the drug may change, which in turn will increase or decrease the plasma concentration of the drug. Increased plasma concentrations may lead to toxicity, while decreases in therapy failure. The pharmacodynamics of the drug can be affected in two aspects, in synergy and antagonism.
