The book outlines hidden connections between wine and blood from antiquity to modern times. Myths and legends associated with both fluids are explored through chapters on, for example,  history, religion, disease, gender, vampirism, and DNA analysis. I think most people would agree that blood is a necessary fluid for life and perhaps, some would also agree that wine serves a similar function. Irrespective of your view, it may come as a surprise to learn that there are multiple overlaps between historical and theological descriptions of blood and wine and their close relationship. Many books have been written about wine and its consumption. In a world which is almost taken over with synthetic substances and virtual experiences, it is a joy for many people to have access to a human-grown beverage like wine. The joys of wine are many but its capacity to encourage companionship and conversation is certainly one. The old Greek adage In vino veritas (truth is in wine), later translated into Latin, contains an element of truth, but we have all probably been in situations in which over indulgence can blur that truth. This book does not intend to extend a knowledge of either blood or wine or indulgence in the latter but, rather, it directs attention to the remarkable and overlooked relationships between these two precious nectars. At first glance, there does not appear to be any relationship, but as a haematologist (a specialist in blood diseases) and a wine drinker for many years, I have found on closer examination, many surprising similarities, which became the basis of this book.
