This book explores the historical evolution of Hakka culture in the Liudui region of Taiwan and attempts to present it through the architectural design of a cultural center. The Zhu Yigui Rebellion of 1721 spurred the development of the Liudui Hakka militia organization in the Kaohsiung-Pingtung area, and their subsequent heroic resistance against the Japanese. Liudui thus became the organizational form for Hakka armed forces and self-governance in the Xiadanshui area. The unique characteristics of Liudui Hakka culture are still preserved today. While the Liudui armed mechanism has become unnecessary and disappeared, the region still retains a strong sense of Hakka customs and traditions.
