Louis XVI and the Collapse of Reform Monarchy examines the reign of France’s last Bourbon king as a study in political failure, institutional resistance, and the limits of royal reform. Rather than presenting Louis XVI only as a passive victim of revolution or as an incapable ruler, this book places him within the fragile political world of late eighteenth-century France, where fiscal crisis, social privilege, public opinion, court politics, and inherited structures of authority made reform both urgent and extremely difficult.
