Louis XVI and the Collapse of Reform Monarchy examines the reign of France’s last Bourbon king as a study in political failure, institutional resistance, and the limits of royal reform. Rather than presenting Louis XVI only as a passive victim of revolution or as an incapable ruler, this book places him within the fragile political world of late eighteenth-century France, where fiscal crisis, social privilege, public opinion, court politics, and inherited structures of authority made reform both urgent and extremely difficult. The book follows Louis XVI from his accession in 1774 through the collapse of absolute monarchy, the experiment of constitutional kingship, the flight to Varennes, the fall of the monarchy, and his trial and execution in 1793. It explores the king’s attempts to manage debt, reform taxation, respond to ministerial proposals, and preserve monarchical legitimacy in a society increasingly shaped by demands for representation, equality, and national sovereignty. Special attention is given to the contradiction at the heart of Louis XVI’s reign: he recognized the need for reform, yet the monarchy lacked the political language, institutional flexibility, and public trust required to carry reform through. The result was a widening gap between royal intention and political reality. Financial breakdown became constitutional crisis; administrative weakness became a question of sovereignty; and the person of the king became inseparable from the fate of the old regime. Structured with chronology, thematic chapters, key concepts, discussion questions, glossary, and references, this volume is suitable for students, general readers, and anyone interested in the final crisis of the French monarchy. It offers a focused portrait of Louis XVI not merely as the king who lost his throne, but as a ruler caught between reform and revolution, tradition and legitimacy, authority and collapse.
