This book examines the possible role of plant melanin-like pigments in protection against environmental pollutants, including heavy metals, pesticides, microplastics and ionizing radiation. Using knowledge of plant stress biology, pigment biochemistry and evidence from radio-tolerant fungi in the Chernobyl environment, it considers whether melanin in plants may be involved in antioxidant defence, metal binding and environmental resilience. It also differentiates plant and fungal melanin, identifies major research gaps and sets future directions for phytoremediation, development of stress tolerant crops and sustainable environmental restoration.
