In Democracy on a Human Scale, Harold McDougall seeks to understand why so many social justice movements form, burn brightly, and then either fade or are transformed away from their original mission.

His exploration is interdisciplinary, using biological, anthropological, psychological and sociological research to first examine the origins of injustice as "human hierarchy" emerged.

Hierarchy begins with patriarchy and then ramifies endlessly" in other forms of subordination, including racism, class conflict, and ethnic and religious intolerance. Such hierarchies "other" outsiders, foster fears and prejudices among insiders. Unchallenged, these hierarchies breed not only social subordination but also social alienation and violence
