The following pages contain four cases. These cases are written in a narration style, taking the reader step by step through how a particular patient was managed. The identities of the patients have been kept hidden. However, the patients were asked for permission to write their cases for others to learn from. The first two cases focus on the clinical management of the conditions in a resource-limited setting. The emphasis is not on the pathophysiology of the conditions or the science behind the management that was employed. The main focus is on how such cases would be successfully managed in settings where diagnostics and treatment options are a great challenge. The clinical judgement is given precedence. The last two cases focus on what would be done differently to treat the patients better. These two cases I have decided to ca ll significant events, as the main focus is to analyze the events surrounding the clinical errors that took place and how to prevent similar errors in future.
