he immune system plays an important part in prevention against infectious diseases and in combating existing infections in the body. For the body to mount an effective immune response there is involvement of first, the innate immune system followed by the adaptive immune responses. The innate immune system acts killing the pathogens and also by generating immunological mediators including cytokines and host defense peptides that activate other immune cells including attracting them to the site of infection. The products and the response of the innate immunity is what activates the adaptive immune response. The adaptive immune response will include the participation of T cells and B cells. The T cells get activated by the antigens processed and presented by dendritic cells and activated macrophages. Activated T cells, in particular the helper T cells in turn generate additional cytokines that activate B cells that also get activated by the pathogen antigens to differentiate into effector antibody producing plasma cells and memory B cells.
